ERMA BOMBECK WRITERS' WORKSHOP NEWSLETTER
University of Dayton
April 2004
mailto:erma@udayton.edu
**************************************************************
I've never had so much fun working! The 2004 Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop was a blast. The speakers were
incredible, as were the 300 attendees who traveled from 38 states and four countries to participate. If you didn't get
to attend this year's workshop, mark your calendar for spring 2006, when we'll hold the next workshop. In a
follow-up survey of attendees, 86 percent of attendees said they plan to return in 2006. Here are a few of their
comments...
"The best just got better. Simply the finest workshop of its kind, hands-down!"
"It was the most wonderful experience of my writing life."
"The most well-organized conference I've ever attended...The only way to improve it would be to serve free scotch during the sessions... "
"I have been to many workshops and conferences over the years and this is the first one I attended that I did not
want to end."
"The keynote speakers were terrific -- I laughed till I cried! -- and the workshops I attended were very helpful
and gave me a lot of great ideas."
In addition to the usual stories and markets, this issue of the newsletter includes some reflections from writers who
attended the workshop.
Keep writing!
Tim Bete
Humor columnist (http://www.TimBete.com) and director, Erma
Bombeck Writers' Workshop (http://www.HumorWriters.org)
P.S. Feel free to forward this newsletter to all your
writer friends.

CONFESSIONS OF A SEMI-SUCCESSFUL AUTHOR
An incredible article in which an author shares "how much my publishers have paid me for the books I've written...how
many copies each of those books has sold...and the secrets, lies and euphemisms told to me by my publishers, editors,
publicists and agents in their efforts to comfort, pacify and motivate me." Note: If you don’t subscribe to Salon,
you'll need to view an ad before you're allowed to read the article.

WHY BOTHER?
Being a writer provides little glamour. It can be a solitary occupation without much financial reward. Why
bother? Workshop director, Tim Bete, answered that question in his remarks at a workshop dinner for speakers and VIPs.

You are never too old to learn or try something new. I preach it all the time. I took my own advice and found
myself flying to Dayton, Ohio to attend the Erma Bombeck Writers Workshop. This is not just anybody’s writers’
